Six years after we published La casa de La Dentista , Carolina and Mía finally got their sequel.
And no, escaping the island did not solve all their problems.
La ciudad de La Dentista picks up one year later. Carolina and Mía are living in Chicago with the enigmatic Aunt Isidora, trying to move on with their lives.
The island, unfortunately, has other plans.
The story didn't end at the house
La ciudad de La Dentista is Book 2 in the Dentista series, following La casa de La Dentista .
Carolina wants to keep a low profile. Mía believes they have a responsibility to tell the world what happened on the island. Meanwhile, Isidora is having some very strange problems of her own, and the girls begin to realize that the danger they escaped may not be as far away as they thought.
Juan Carlos Pinilla and I wanted the sequel to feel bigger than the first book without losing what made the original work: mystery, visual storytelling, and the creeping suspicion that something is very, very wrong.
Do students need to read La casa de La Dentista first?
Yes. This is a real sequel, not just another story with the same characters. Mysteries from the first book are answered here, and the emotional stakes depend on knowing what Carolina and Mía survived.

A Spanish graphic novel for beginning students
The print edition of La ciudad de La Dentista is written at Novice Low , making it appropriate for Spanish 1 and 2.
That doesn't mean every single line is artificially restricted to a tiny vocabulary list. That's not how I want to write stories.
Instead, we simplified the language as much as we could while protecting the story. The illustrations carry an enormous amount of meaning, essential language repeats throughout the book, and a Spanish-to-English glossary is available page by page.

How scary is it?
Like the first book, La ciudad de La Dentista is a mystery first and a thriller second.
There is no gore, sexual content, or bad language. But there is a very real sense of danger, and we don't pull all the punches just because students are reading in another language.
We recommend it for middle school and up. If La casa de La Dentista felt appropriate for your students, this one is in the same neighborhood.

La Ville de La Dentiste is now available as the sequel to Le Manoir de La Dentiste . It's written for Novice High French readers and is appropriate for French 2, 3, and 4.
Like the Spanish edition, it's 163 pages and includes a per-page French-to-English glossary.
