So, we finally tackled one of our biggest classics.

We created a brand-new 5-day lesson plan for our music video, Guapo.

But before I tell you about it, here's a little behind-the-scenes tidbit you may not know: I actually filmed Guapo and its sequel, La confesión de Víctor, during the same weekend.

That's because, from the beginning, I knew Víctor's story didn't start and end with Guapo.

Behind the story

Víctor was built around a contradiction

On the outside, he declares his good looks with total confidence, convinced that appearance is all that matters.

But even in Guapo, cracks begin to show. In the scene where Víctor mocks someone for being unattractive, both characters are played by me. Víctor is quite literally insulting the version of himself he has worked so hard to hide from the world.

A 5-day Spanish lesson plan built around more than appearances

That deeper story became the inspiration for our new 5-day lesson plan for Guapo.

The lesson plan helps students look beyond Víctor's swagger and examine the gap between who he really is and the image he presents to the world.

The activities give students a chance to see that Guapo is a lot more than Víctor bragging about how handsome he is.

Perfect for Spanish 1 physical and personality descriptions

For more than a decade, Spanish teachers around the world have used Guapo to enrich units on physical and personality descriptions. These new lesson plans are especially well suited for those early Spanish 1 units where students are first learning to describe people.

Like all of our lesson plans, though, they're scaffolded across four proficiency levels. The story stays the same, but the conversations, writing, and analysis grow more sophisticated at each level.

20 classroom activities

One of our favorites: Character Quilt

The lesson plan includes 20 classroom activities, plus assessments and extension activities.

One activity we’re especially excited to include is Character Quilt.

In our Guapo version, students create a hexagon all about themselves, then work together in small groups to connect everyone's pieces into collaborative Character Quilts. They're searching for classmates with matching traits, making connections, negotiating where pieces belong, and watching their group's quilt come to life.

We also updated the rest of the Guapo experience

This isn't just a new set of lesson plans. We've also updated the full experience around them. All the language in the Guapo Nuggets has been overhauled to match the lesson-plan language.

We also changed one lyric in the song.

New
...con tu pelo canoso y ojos marrones...
Previously
...con tu pelo canoso y ojos pequeños...

Looking back, the original lyric was always one of the weaker lines in the song. I wrote it mainly to make the rhyme, and "ojos pequeños" never really made sense within the context of the story. After receiving feedback that the phrase could also be interpreted as an Asian stereotype, we decided it was time for a better lyric.
